Healthy Aging Month

September is Healthy Aging Month! Many factors influence healthy aging. Some of these, such as genetics, are not in our control. Others — like exercise, a healthy diet, going to the doctor regularly, and taking care of our mental health — are within our reach. Make this month the time to set up your annual physical, dental checkups, and other health screenings.  It is vital to go to the doctor for regular health screenings for healthy aging. Regular checkups help doctors catch chronic diseases early and can help patients reduce risk factors for disease, such as high blood pressure and cholesterol levels. In some cases, regular checkups have been linked to improved quality of life and feelings of wellness.

For older adults, being socially isolated can harm mental and cognitive health and increase the risk of developing dementia. Many older adults face a higher risk of isolation because they live alone, have disabilities, or have recently lost loved ones. It is clear that addressing this issue is crucial for maintaining good health and well-being as we age.

So how should we combat loneliness as we age? Staying connected within a community is a must when it comes to protecting our mental health, and especially as we age. There are many ways to engage in your community whether it is staying in touch with friends and family members by scheduling times to meet in person, or chat over video call, or considering joining a class at your local library or community center. Another great way to stay connected and to stay active at the same time, is to join in on group exercise clubs and classes that may take place in your community. There are many great options at the Lunda Community Center. Or consider registering for Stepping On, a program where you can learn from experts and other community members about how to prevent falls. Call the ADRC of Jackson County at 715-284-3978 to learn more.

If these options are out of your comfort-zone, it is still important to have those in your life that you trust to check in with you regularly, even if it is a nearby neighbor that you enjoy talking with. Community events are also a great way to feel more involved within your community and they give you the opportunity to take part in creating a welcoming space for socializing.

Remember to be aware of how much time you are spending alone and make it a habit to talk to someone each day. Spending too much time alone not only detrimentally impacts your social life, but your health as well, so make community a priority. Understand that when you choose to spend time with others, you are enhancing not only your social well-being but your physical and mental health as well, which your body will thank you for later.
