Health benefits of WIC

WIC plays an important role in improving birth outcomes and improving children’s health. Studies have found participation in WIC:

  • Reduces infant death

  • Reduces low birthweight rates

  • Improves the growth of nutritionally at-risk infants and children

  • Improves the dietary intake of pregnant and postpartum women and improves weight gain in pregnant women.

  • Children enrolled in WIC are more likely to have a regular source of medical care.

All participants, their parents or caregivers receive nutrition information that is individualized by the WIC professional to address the specific needs identified during a WIC appointment.

Formulas and Medical Nutritionals:

  • Standard contract formulas.

  • Special formulas for infants and children with special needs.

  • Medical foods (Ensure/Boost) for children and women with special needs.

WIC foods are prescribed by the certifying health professional based on the age and dietary needs of the participant. WIC may not provide all the nutritional needs required by the participant.
